My name is Jean McGuire. I am an American yoga instructor who has been teaching yoga in the Kansas City area for more than 15 years. I have taught in the downtown area, I have taught in the suburbs, I even taught in a homeless shelter. I am 57 years old, have three grown daughters and five grandchildren to date. I was a distance runner in my 40’s and early 50’s. I also competed in sprint triathlons for 10 years. I love the sports, but age and a herniated disc in my neck have pretty much eliminated my ability to race. Fortunately, I can still teach.
In February of 2014 I quit my full-time corporate job. Why? Because I was miserable. I knew that there had to be a better way for me to support myself. I knew beyond all shadow of a doubt I am not meant to work in a box with other people. I especially am not meant to work with people with agendas. So the question I had to ask was “what’s next?”
Many years ago, I had my own yoga studio. Due to a poor choice in business partners, I could not sustain the studio. I also love words and how they can be put together in infinitesimal combinations. A clever phrase engages and delights me. Combining my love of words with my love of yoga seemed a natural progression. I may or may not open another studio some day, but for right now, I want to share my thoughts, my beliefs and my yoga with as many people as possible.
How did I come up with the name Jasmine Petals Yoga? My initials are JASM and I always used to joke that I only needed to marry three more men to spell out Jasmine. I think I will be doing a lot of men a big favor by naming my videos and my blog Jasmine instead. In my blogs, I always try to educate and entertain. It is amazing to me how easy it is to be funny when talking and how hard it is when writing.
What can you expect to see in future posts? Anything that catches my fancy. I hope to educate people about their bodies and their health. I also hope to share any insights I may have gained through the years. I also wouldn’t be surprised if the 12 year old boy sense of humor doesn’t rear it’s humorous head occasionally. Body functions are funny, right?
2016: What’s happened since this blog originally posted? I re-discovered my love of painting and have been blessed in how well my work has been received. I have had a number of exhibits and displays of my work and I can see the progress every time I paint. Recently, I had the opportunity to create a webpage for my work. Please visit my painting page ArtbyJeanMcGuire.com, and let me know your thoughts.
